Good morning, My name is Sonya George. I have been noticing a space developing between my left upper canine and molar. I am unsure whether it is an orthodontic issue (since the metal part of my retainer is between those two teeth) or if it is a dental issue. It is painful after I eat and I usually find an unusually large amount of food between these teeth when i floss. I wanted to know if this gap can be fixed. Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it

I’m sorry, I meant to say the gap is in between the first and second tooth behind my left upper canine. The gap can be seen in second and third tooth in the picture without my retainer. Thank you
Hello Sonya,
It appears you have fillings on the back of the premolar (first) and front of the second (molar). The likely change causing the space is dental related as the orthodontic correction has been stabilized. Have you had any recent work done to these teeth?
If the fillings are new or at least still in good shape, the space can likely be closed with a modification of your retainer by adding a spring behind the molar.
Call office to schedule an exam with impression to modify retainer. Tell receptionist you did a Telexam and this was instruction.
See you soon,
Dr. Lance
